Living Building Challenge Core interior renovation for materials scientists

Three big ideas:

Living Building Challenge,
Healthy Interiors,
Biophilic

The Malvern Innovation Center is composed of laboratories and office spaces for the North America Headquarters of one of the largest building product manufacturers in the world.  The low slung 1970’s brick building is being reimagined as a sustainable and forward thinking research center with multiple phases that include painting the exterior to match the headquarters building on campus, new signage, and replacement of the original building’s glazing.  The first phase of interior renovations is focused on creating a sustainable, bright, and engaging workspace area that includes a lively cafe with a view out to campus and the surrounding tree canopy.  The building’s main entrance lobby is also being renovated as a gathering point for visitors to the research center. Primary design drivers include utilizing as many of the client’s products as possible, salvaged materials, low toxicity materials, and incorporation of biophilic design elements.

The interior renovation project is pursuing Living Building Challenge Core certification and LEED for Commercial Interiors and is slated to complete construction in mid 2023.
