This 70,000 ft2 suburban elementary school is pursuing LEED Gold certification by reducing its grid-supplied energy consumption to staggering lows. Coupled with an efficient building design, a 125 kW solar PV array provides 30% of the annual energy demand. In total, energy consumption from the grid is reduced by an anticipated 47%. These savings are displayed to students on a public dashboard, taking advantage of a built-in learning opportunity. Additional reductions in carbon dioxide production come from the school’s fleet of propane-powered busses. Outside the school, the sizable lot manages the 98th percentile of storm events by infiltrating water through green infrastructure.
