Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s ‘compress and release’ space organization strategies, the homeowners wanted to convert an existing split level home to support life on one level, with a small addition to add more living space at the ground floor and guest space on the second floor. With efficiency in mind, the design follows Passive House principles to reduce energy usage and increase indoor comfort. A generous rear patio supports indoor/outdoor living and entertaining, and wood materials tie the interior to the exterior. Central skylights add natural light at the core of the house, where dedicated art display areas are illuminated and incorporated into the daily flow of life in the home.

By adding a small rear addition and modifying the split levels to create a single first floor, the house can serve all its primary functions one one level.
Flexible guest/office space at the second level look out over the first floor roof, where a green roof adds visual interest and supports stormwater management.
The classic split level rear of the house had good bones and the flexibility to improve.
The height and size of the existing home fit with the neighborhood, and informed the scale of the renovation and addition.
