Weavers Way Germantown

Philaldelphia, Pennsylvania

Fresh food Co-Op market in a former Philadelphia food desert

Three big ideas:

Adaptive Reuse,
Community Market,
Non-Profit

Weavers Way Community Co-Op has long been a staple in Philadelphia.  The member-owned cooperative grocery store prides themselves on inclusivity, affordability, and high quality products that are local, sustainable, organic, and fairly traded.  The new Germantown store exemplifies the Co-op’s message of sustainability by reusing an existing building that once served as a grocery store in the 1960s.   The design focuses on thermal and mechanical improvements by installing new insulation inside all the existing masonry walls and new insulated, thermally broken windows, doors, and new skylights.  New roof insulation will be added above the existing wood roof deck, providing additional energy efficiency while preserving the character of the wood on the interior of the space.  The new grocery area will have the feel of a fresh food market with lofty space highlighting the existing steel structure.  The store aims to be a modest, but inviting addition to the neighborhood it will serve.

The Weavers Way Germantown store is slated to open in late 2023!
